Riley Mercer and Ezra Cruz

Riley Mercer and Ezra Cruz were friends and bandmates whose shared history included Juilliard, CRATB, and the 2029 crisis at The Velvet Frame Lounge.

Foundation of the Friendship

Riley and Ezra attended Juilliard and became part of the group of musicians who formed CRATB.

During their early adult years, Riley, Ezra, and Peter Liu shared a Brooklyn apartment. The household became one of the places where their friendship developed into chosen family.

Riley and Ezra’s temperaments differed sharply. Ezra could be loud, restless, charming, and emotionally volatile; Riley was economical, still, and difficult to pull into a performance of reaction. The contrast did not make either person responsible for regulating the other. It gave them a way to offer care that did not reproduce their own habits.

Dynamics and Communication

Riley was direct with Ezra when his behavior hurt other people. During Ezra’s early conflict with Charlie Rivera, Riley told Ezra that he was wrong rather than reflexively taking his side. Riley then stayed with Charlie after the confrontation.

After Ezra physically pushed Charlie during an argument, Riley found him and said, “You know you fucked up, right?” The statement named what had happened without becoming a lecture or a fight Ezra could redirect. Riley remained willing to sit with him after he acknowledged it; accountability and care were not competing loyalties.

Riley also cared for Ezra through practical presence. During Ezra’s rehabilitation after his 2035 overdose, Riley visited daily and stayed with him while he cried or became sick during withdrawal. After rehabilitation, Ezra slept on Riley’s couch when the risk of relapse and the prospect of being alone felt most dangerous. Riley remained nearby without monitoring him or requiring explanations.

Ezra offered loyalty and protection without requiring Riley to match his social energy. He learned that their silences could be complete answers, that sudden sleep was not a joke or rejection, and that cataplexy required protection from injury without treating Riley as unconscious. Riley could tell Ezra when his volume, schedule, or behavior had crossed a line because neither of them mistook directness for lack of love.

Brooklyn Apartment

The apartment Riley, Ezra, and Peter shared became the principal domestic setting of their early friendship. Each had private sleeping space, and the common rooms held instruments, late meals, difficult conversations, and the ordinary access work of living with variable bodies and schedules.

In 2028, Ezra called Nina late at night while he was drunk and emotionally unguarded. Riley heard enough to recognize that he needed Nina rather than an interrogation. They made chamomile tea, set it beside him, later prepared a mug for Nina, and withdrew far enough to give them privacy while remaining available.

Riley’s approach was consistent: observe, meet the practical need, and do not require the person receiving care to explain why they needed it. Ezra accepted support from Riley that he might have resisted if it had arrived as surveillance or a demand to promise he was fine.

Shared History and Milestones

Riley and Ezra were both present during the shooting at the Velvet Frame Lounge. Riley experienced severe cataplexy, remained conscious while unable to move, and was taken to the hospital with Peter Liu accompanying them.

Police tased and restrained Ezra while he tried to reach the critically wounded Nina. Riley saw the violence and Ezra’s distress, and the emotional shock precipitated the cataplexy. Riley’s immobility was not sleep or fainting. Peter protected their body, communicated with emergency responders, and rode with them while Jacob Keller went to Ezra.

2035: Rehabilitation and Early Recovery

After Ezra survived a fentanyl-laced pill and entered rehabilitation, Riley visited him every day. They held him when he cried, stayed through episodes of vomiting and withdrawal sickness, and continued showing up without demanding reassurance from him.

When Ezra left rehabilitation, he stayed on Riley’s couch during the first part of recovery. The arrangement gave him company during nights when cravings made solitude unsafe while preserving the privacy he needed.

Riley did not expect recovery to move in a straight line or treat an emotionally difficult visit as evidence that Ezra was failing. Some nights he slept; some nights he remained awake listening to the ordinary sounds of another person in the next room. Riley’s presence made the apartment inhabited without converting it into a monitored environment.

Public Perception

The public sometimes speculated that Riley and Ezra were romantically involved because they appeared together frequently and were physically comfortable in one another’s space. Neither treated the rumor as important enough to build a public campaign around denying it. Their actual relationship was intimate chosen family rather than romance.

Ezra once asked whether they should try dating “just for publicity.” Riley answered, “You’re gorgeous, Ezra, but I’d murder you before the week was up.” The exchange became a band story because the answer was both affectionate and entirely credible as Riley’s assessment of their compatibility.

Riley also mocked Ezra’s public effect on audiences in the band group chat: “you are not allowed to wear sleeveless tops to fan events anymore. we’ve voted.” The deadpan line concealed no hostility; it was one of the ways Riley allowed warmth to remain indirect.
